In Donny and Ursula Save the World, the Mushrooms are central characters, but like good detritivores, they don't draw too much attention to themselves. They prefer to work underground, in the background. In this book Mushrooms are symbolic, representing belonging to a network. M. Earth considers the Mushrooms her strategists. They are a part of the mycelial network, an invisible underground communication system. The character Ursula feels she can hear and understand the mushrooms, and she engages them in her plot to save the world. Could it be that the mushrooms orchestrated the whole romance between Donny and Ursula so they could spread their spores throughout the world? You'll find out!
